Fly and worm only no spinning on river beats until 16 June
BEAT 1 (Pontrhydfendigaid Fishery) - The Teifi here is a small river, the best method is to either stalk carefully upstream with a dry fly or downstream with a wet fly when the river is above normal flow. "Match the Hatch", in other words give the Brownies what they are eating at the time. Black Gnat, Hawthorn, Olives and terrestrial patterns are a starting point.
BEAT 2 (Upper Cors Caron Bog) - This is a small beat just below the Railway Bridge on Dolbeudiau land. This is a good area for some Brownies as they like lying under the bridge.
BEAT 2B (Lower Cors Caron Bog) - The Teifi through the bog is a chain of pools and slow runs, do take extra care when walking by the bank, some of the pools are very deep. It is in these that PIKE lurk, they are often caught by Salmon fishermen, Given early high water Salmon, and increasingly Sewin, make it up this far by Spring and stay until running to spawn in the headwaters in Autumn.
BEAT 3 (Penrallt and Trecefel Fishery) (CATCH AND RELEASE - FLY ONLY BEAT) - The runs, riffles and pools overshadowed by trees are a rich habitat for Brownies, try the traditional three wet fly or a bushy dry fly. Or, use a more modern nymph style, alternating with small dry fly. Both can be very effective. To get the flies down use an intermediate or sink tip.
BEAT 4 (Abercarfan and Nantydderwen Fishery) - From the top of Abercarfan waters to the bottom of Nantydderwen Beat 4 is an enticing mix of runs and pools, the fly fisherman has to adopt a range of different styles in order to take fish here. Wet fly in the runs and riffles with a three fly team of Pheasant Tail, Greenwell and Black Quill will suffice for an early season and high water.
BEAT 5 (Pontllanio and Llanio Mill Fishery) - The pools and runs offer fishing which were made famous in the sixties by Oliver Kite, who came here to start his fishing season in early Spring. He was an early advocate of catch and release, usually taking only a brace of fish, his keen eyesight allowed him to spot fish and take them with an upstream nymph. Once, Summer has arrived this fishery is a supreme dry fly idyll.
BEAT 6 (Pont Gogoyan, Werncoli, Penddol and Glanrhoca) - Pont Gogoyan fishery consists of three deep pools, Pwll Peter (Peter's Pool), Pwll-yr-hewl (Road Pool) and Pwll Ysgoldy (School Pool) each will hold Salmon. Try running a sufficiently weighted lob worm or bunch of worms through the neck and down into the depths of these shelved holding pools. There is also two hundred meters of left bank fishing of excellent Brownie water above the bridge. Werncoli is another excellent, but short stretch of fly and spinning water for Salmon and Brownies. Penddol is a mile long stretch, above and below the farm, full of pools and runs. Glanrhoca fishery is two meadows of pleasant fly water
.Beat 7 (Llanfair and Castell Fishery) - Llanfair fishing consists of one mile right bank above the bridge and three hundred meters left bank below. It has good Brownie fishing for the whole season, with the slower waters above the bridge offering exceptional dry fly fishing in the evening. Use fine leader and small flies in these slower stretches. Castell waters is CPTAA's lowest beat and extends for one mile right bank. The top section of this fishery is best for Brownies, but due to the luxuriant bank side growth and overhanging trees it is best fished with chest waders. The dry fly need to be visible and buoyant to ride the broken water. Both sections, can hold Salmon and Sewin in the deeper pools.
Beat 8 (Llyn Berwyn Lake Fishery) - Llyn Berwyn Lake is trickled stocked with Brownies, they do very well up here. With an average weight of over a pound and some can over winter to continue growing. CPTAA members have been broken by large fish, even allowing for anglers not wishing to spoil a good story with the truth, you have been warned. Fly only is allowed, but fishing the margins by careful wading with a small dry fly is a superb way to spend a day here in this remote and beautiful lake. The Summer evening is often a time when the lake boils with rising fish, unfortunately it also brings a particularly vicious midge which is unmoved by repellents, again you have been warned.
Beat 9 (Teifi Pools Fishery) - The three lakes offer superb mountain lake fishing, each has a distinct charm and character, you will need to adapt your style to succeed. The age old method to fish Welsh lakes is to cover most of the margin by step and cast concentrating on the productive areas, gradually working your way around the lake. This is still the best method for Teifi Pools, take a day to explore the far banks, but be careful the walking can be hard going in places. Exercise, dramatic scenery and fishing. For some reason the Pools start fishing really well in early March, the Brownies are generally on the fin so you can start your new fishing year with a floater or sink tip.
BEAT 10 (Nantymaen to Nantllwyd) - Mountain Stream, headwaters of the River Camddwr which enters into Brianne Dam, which supplies the River Towy, with lovely fighting Brownies. Some excellent pools along this stretch. Be careful, very boggy in places.
